Tie Rod in Formwork: The Small Component That Holds Concrete Walls Together On most construction sites, attention goes to concrete, steel, and formwork panels. But there is a small component working quietly in the background. That component is the tie rod in formwork systems . Without it, formwork panels would not stay aligned when fresh concrete pushes against them. Concrete creates enormous pressure during pouring. If the formwork system cannot resist that pressure, the panels may bulge or collapse. Tie rods prevent that situation by holding the shuttering structure together. How a Tie Rod Works in Formwork A tie rod is a threaded steel bar installed between two formwork panels. When contractors tighten wing nuts on both ends, the tie rod locks the panels firmly in place.
